What's the difference between hypnotherapy and counselling?

As a professional hypnotherapist with over twenty-two experience, I prefer working with Hypnotherapy. I looked at counselling and did some training in it to become BACP or UKCP qualified. Some of the ways of helping people are brilliant, and others not as effective as hypnotherapy. Therefore I use hypnosis and counselling, to get you where you want to be. Hypnotherapy deals with the unconscious mind, that part within you that you don’t have access to, to find out what the root cause is, or use parts of your mind, or parts within you, to help you be the person you want to be.

 
Talk therapy, and counselling, often takes much longer. It can be good; teaching you how to resolve some of the psychological issues that have been going on in your life, however almost all of the clients I see have tried Counselling and have failed to get the desired effect and have remained anxious, angry or depressed. In my humble opinion you often need to get deeper.


Piers says "In some cases, I blend therapies together to get you where you want to be as quickly as possible, to make sure that your suffering is as short as possible. When I work with people, whether due to depression, anxiety, changing habits, suicidal thoughts, I change the way they look at the world and their relationship with themselves within four to six weeks. Counselling often takes significantly longer. For example, I have heard of people being in Counselling for years.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Yes - if you are working with an experienced and well-trained Hypnotherapist, it is totally safe. The therapist will make sure that you are suitable for Hypnotherapy and if you are not, they can refer you on to someone who can safely help.

When you are driving a car from A to B, often you don’t really think about the roundabouts you go round, or the traffic lights you pass, or making sure that you go from first, second, third, fourth, fifth gear, etc… You don’t really think about the safety; you talk to passengers, listen to the radio or let your mind wonder a bit. Yet, when the car in front slows down, you automatically slow down. When the traffic light turns red, you automatically stop, and when it turns green, you then carry on driving. Often, you will get somewhere, and you think, "How did I get here? I don’t remember the journey." You were safe and you were driving with your unconscious mind; you were allowing the hypnotic state of driving to get you from A to B and you were perfectly safe. You are safer when working with a well-trained Hypnotherapist.


Hypnosis or hypnotherapy is not a state of 'eyes closed', we can go through so many different things with our eyes open and be in some form of trance for example watching something really gripping on the television, you will actually re-live or live that moment the performer is going through - you are emotionally connected with the scene.


When you’re in your session, you close your eyes and let your mind relax and perhaps start doing visualisations or change work. I ask people to close their eyes because the experience is deeper and makes change easier. I give positive suggestions that sink into the unconscious mind and make changes, and that’s what makes this way of working with people so magical.

 
Is hypnosis safe? You bet it is. It’s fast and pretty well every single person over the last twenty-two years of working with me has absolutely loved it and has received many benefits from it.

How can hypnotherapy help me?

We all know that throughout our lives, we have challenges and sometimes we need help to overcome them. I have learned many techniques and disciplines to help people get the desired effect and go on to live amazing lives. The way these techniques are put together is imperative. I have trained others in many aspects of my craft and am often shocked by the lack of depth to their knowledge and skills. Over the past 20 plus years, I have rarely come across anything that I do not have the skills to help with.


My professional skills of Hypnotherapy, hypnosis, NLP, and other assorted disciplines get into the unconscious mind, making permanent changes. Whether you are having panic attacks, are depressed, have suicidal thoughts or simply need more confidence, if you would like to stop smoking or if you are overweight, I have the skills to help you.


Your conscious mind is everything that you think, and is about 3% of your mind, and 97% of your mind is your unconscious mind, that’s everything that you learn. Rather like an iceberg, most of it is ‘under the surface’ - this is where I concentrate and deal with the causes of your issues, releasing old pain, old anger and old thoughts.


Once you have learned something you don’t have to think about it, it automatically happens. There is no physical conscious or unconscious. If you dissected a brain, you will not find it, but this is the model that we use and it helps people understand more about how changes are made.

 
When you think about things you want to change, it’s very difficult to change something that you’ve learned, but using hypnosis and hypnotherapy, you can. If you’ve learnt over your life that "I’m not good enough", "I’m not loveable", "I can’t cope" or "I’m not confident", we can actually use hypnosis to change that to make sure that you can learn; "I am loveable", "I am confident", "I do feel good about myself" or "I am going to have fun" and other positive mindsets like that. We can change the way that you operate, by looking into your unconscious mind and changing what happens there. We change the way you think, the way you feel and the way you behave.

 
Over the years, I have helped sports people improve their sports, changing their mindset using sports hypnosis and NLP, a fantastic specialist area.
