Weight Loss

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy for effective weight loss in Bury St Edmunds, Red Lodge, Woolpit and Ipswich in Suffolk.

You have arrived at this page because you have tried a number of diets or eating regimes which work for a while and then you gain all the weight that you lost with an extra few pounds. You can take some comfort in the knowledge that you are not alone.

The problem with dieting is that it can seem like a battle and too easy to fail at and then you have to start all over again. Diets need constant concentration and many find them impossible to keep to, constantly fighting their eating habits.

There is a plethora of information out there about portion sizes, fad diets, binge eating, food addictions and must eat healthy choices – however these do little to help and in most cases they have a negative effect causing the immortal lines ‘I will start again tomorrow’.

What I offer is based on some of the simple observations  that dieting does work, but only in the short term. For many people, once the target weight is reached they ease off dieting and go back to normal eating with the extra biscuit with your tea/coffee and the reintroduction of snacking.. it is this that puts on the pounds, kilo and stones.

Is this a habit or is it compulsive emotional eating.

A couple of extra biscuits a day – however innocently eaten, account for about 200 calories a day. With 3000 calories equating to 1lb of fat onto your body therefore your innocent biscuits equal over a stone and a half (over 10 kilos) in a year.

This example shows a habit where we do something at certain times of the day or with people in certain situations. However sometimes these habits run much deeper than those of a couple of biscuits and become compulsive or emotional eating. It feeds something inside us – a distraction to make us feel better,  and no amounts of food is ever going to fill that emotional hole that gives the craving or hungry feeling.

You may have done well on your diet and kept the weight off for a month or year however as you return to your life you cone across triggers that start you over-eating again. Often one simple thing such as having a bad day at work and seeking comfort in the nibbles, biscuits or wine to make you feel better.

Diets alone do not work in the long term for most people and end in failure as there are many other factors to be taken into consideration, and having seen may clients for weight loss over the last 12-14 years, dieting can leave people feeling sad, miserable which in turn fuels the emotional eating.

Is food the issue?

In most cases food is not the issue – it is the habits, thoughts and it is a distracter. Feel bad – distract! This is sometimes called comfort eating or emotional eating where the food covers up or fill up the void of the emotion or feeling. No amount of food will ever satisfy these feelings.

We were not born to overeat – if you watch a baby eat it will stop when it is full and if you continue to feed it, it will spit it out or turn its head away. As we grow we become conditioned to finish the food on our plate or food is used as a reward or punishment. This behaviour slowly replaces the internal or default settings and therefore we start being out of control, over eating or gorging – all this without realising. Some feel that there is an internal saboteur as this behaviour of overeating is not what we want at a conscious level.

Does hypnotherapy help with weight loss?

Hypnotherapy gets to the root cause of the comfort or emotional eating changing how you feel or react to things in your life by working on the emotions that are driving this behaviour.

These driver that make us over eat or turn to food are at a subconscious level, when these are addressed you can return to good healthy eating without the ‘saboteur’. Therefore good nutrition and exercise will result in a natural weight loss without dieting.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is different. Many believe that hypnosis is magical and that it is one of cure – however this is not true. There is no magical cure to stopping binge eating. There is, however, a process of clearing the emotional drivers and the need to binge so overeating goes.

Most people will need between 5-6 sessions however some take longer.
